Food: Norwang serves Asian food, which is popular among its customers. Its “Fried Beans” are among the dishes people often recommend. The beans have a texture that suggests deep-frying and share similarities with Sichuan dry-fried green beans, which use ingredients such as ginger, dried chilies, scallions, and green beans. Norwang’s version uses black beans rather than pork. Dry-frying gives the beans a crisp texture, distinguishing them from the fried beans served at Common Ground.
Vibe: The place evokes Greece, particularly Santorini. Indian movies like *Bang Bang* and *Wanted*, along with their songs, have helped romanticise the island as the image of Greece. Nolan, however, offers a balance. For those drawn to the Greece of Indian cinema, this place comes close to that dream.
Bougainvillea murals, white walls, street-like flooring, blue doors, and murals of blue-domed churches recreate the island’s familiar visual language.
Yet the sunsets seen through Norwang surpass the Santorini-inspired setting. The surrounding landscape offers something beyond the painted Mediterranean dream.
There is, however, a flaw in the blue-and-white aesthetic: mould on the chairs introduces patches of green, resembling plant roots and bringing an unwanted itchiness to the otherwise picturesque setting.
Hygiene: Why are Santorini’s walls white? Climate, the low cost of lime, and government policy all played a part. In 1938, following a cholera epidemic, the Greek government ordered homes to be limewashed for disinfection.
But limewash cannot solve every hygiene problem. At Norwang, mould on the chairs remains. Although mould does not cause cholera, it can trigger allergic reactions and skin irritation.
The monsoon makes mould difficult to control, but that does not make it harmless. Despite the mould on the chairs, the kitchen appears cleaner than those of many restaurants, and the washroom is reasonably maintained.
Work: The washroom is clean, and Wi-Fi is available. However, the place is not ideal for working.
